Driving in Manhattan mostly sucks: lots of traffic, poor road surfaces, insane TL&C and cabdrivers... But there are two great stretches of road (in a performance car): The length of the Harlem River Drive/FDR w/o traffic is awesome. As is the West Side Highway above 51st street. Watch out for NYPD on both. Set the suspension on 'Touring' too! I've got a method for dealing with city traffic in a manual car: I let the car in front of me get a huge lead (wait for the dope behind you to start honking). Then I drive the car at just above the stalling point in 1st gear and I try not to hit the brakes. It's kind of like driving a really grumpy automatic...
